Akagera National Park is named after a river that runs through it. Located in the North eastern part of Rwanda is the Akagera National Park at the border with Tanzania. The park’s relatively warm and low lying plains comprise of the Savannah, woodland,wetlands and a dozen of lakes. The park of Africa’s central largest protected wetland and the last remaining refugee for Savannah adapted species. It was founded in 1934 and it derives its name from the river Akagera which denotes the frontier with Tanzania.
The park has a variety of wildlife and is a perfect habitant for over 500 different bird species. Akagera National Park has become a big five destination after the reintroduction of lions and the black rhinos so this makes it an ideal destination for big five safaris. The park protects a good number of African Savannah landscape of acacia and bush, with patches of open grassland and a dozen of swampy lakes. It has execptional levels of biodiversity and forms a large protected wetlands. Akagera is the only Savannah national park in the land of a thousand hills and the only place where you can sight most of the large mammals while on an African safari. Akagera National Park is a big game destination where you are welcomed with large herds of elephants and buffaloes that emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes. About 50 pods hippos grunt and splutter throughout the day while out sized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws menacingly agape. Magically, the air is torn a part by the pair of fish egales, asserting their status as the avian monarchs of Africa’s water ways. Lining the lakes are some of the continent’s densest concentrations of water birds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek,the bizarre shoebill stork which is the most eagerly sought of all African birds.

Boat cruise safaris;
There is no better way to spend an afternoon in Akagera National Park. Than to taking a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. An afternoon boat cruise introduces you to most animals that are hiding under shades, due to heat from the sun as others come to cool off and also drink water. This is because Rwanda lies 2 degrees in the southern part of the equator line so its generally high altitudes implies that it experiences moderates temperatures are hardly extreme. And so the best time to visit Akagera National Park is during the dry season and this is because during the wet season the routes are impassable.
Akagera National Park is located in the north eastern part of Rwanda. It is about 110km from Kigali the capital city of Rwanda approximately 2 and a half hours drive.
