Akagera National Park A stunning National Park where the past has been revived

Akagera National Park is named after a river that runs through it. When it comes to scenic points of views, the park is simply the most stunning Savannah park and one of Rwanda’s  natural treasures that will remind you of the Savannah reserves of Tanzania and magical Kenya. You will find splendid open Savannah plains, broad- leaved forests and pleasant hills, lakes teaming up with crocodiles and being infested with large schools of hippos. Located in the North eastern part of Rwanda is the Akagera National Park at the border with Tanzania. The park’s relatively warm and low lying plains comprise of the Savannah, woodland,wetlands and a dozen of lakes. The park of Africa’s central largest protected wetland and the last remaining refugee for Savannah adapted species. It was founded in 1934 and it derives its name from the river Akagera which denotes the frontier with Tanzania.

The park has a variety of wildlife and is a perfect habitant for over 500 different bird species. Akagera National Park has become a big five destination after the reintroduction of lions and the black rhinos so this makes it an ideal destination for big five safaris. The park protects a good number of African  Savannah landscape of acacia and bush, with patches of open grassland and a dozen of swampy lakes. It has execptional levels of biodiversity and forms a large protected wetlands. Akagera is the only Savannah national park in the land of a thousand hills and the only place where you can sight most of the large mammals while on an African safari. Akagera National Park is a big game destination where you are welcomed with large herds of elephants and buffaloes that emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes. But also lucky visitors might stumble a cross a spotted hyena or even a stray lion. Giraffes and Zebras amble through the Savannah and more than a dozen of types of antelopes inhabit the park, most commonly the handsome chestnut-coated impala,the diminutive oribi, the secretive bushbuck and as well as the ungainly tsessebe and world’s largest antelope the statuesque cape eland.

About 50 pods hippos grunt and splutter throughout the day while out sized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws menacingly agape. Magically, the air is torn a part by the pair of  fish egales, asserting their status as the avian monarchs of Africa’s  water ways. Lining the lakes are some of the continent’s densest concentrations of water birds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek,the bizarre shoebill stork which is the most eagerly sought of all African birds.

Game drives;

The park is home to a variety of wildlife like herds of elephants, buffaloes,giraffes,Zebras, hippos and also cats like lions, leopards but you can also gasp for breath when your eyes land on a spotted hyena etc. It also accommodates a several antelopes and these include bushbucks,Topis,Oribis,waterbucks,roan antelopes, Impalas and the world’s largest antelope the cape eland. You will not stop at that, you will also be able to sight large schools of hippos and crocodiles infesting and basking in the sun near lake Ihema. Common primates to view or see in Akagera National Park are the olive baboons,vervet monkeys,blue monkeys and bushbabies and these are often seen on the night game drives.

Boat cruise safaris;

There is no better way to spend an afternoon  in Akagera National Park. Than to taking a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. An afternoon boat cruise introduces you to most animals that are hiding under shades, due to heat from the sun as others come to cool off and also drink water. But while on your afternoon boat cruise you will be able to come across some bird species like the fish egales that are ever up high in trees and looking out for fish in the water and that is why they are called fish egales. On top of a variety of water bird species, you will be able to come up close with hippos in the water and crocodiles by the shores of the lake.

The park is rewarding as  it offers birders an opportunity to sight both the endangered bird species like the papyrus gonolek, fish egale,weaver, egrets,shobill stork, African wattled plover, giant king fisher, Senegal lapwing,squacco heron, open billed stork,hamerkop,sacred and hadada Ibis, Augur Buzzard, pied crow etc.

This is because Rwanda lies 2 degrees  in the southern part of the equator line so its generally high altitudes implies that it experiences moderates temperatures are hardly extreme. And so the best time to visit Akagera National Park is during the dry season and this is because during the wet season the routes are impassable.

Akagera National Park is located in the north eastern part of Rwanda. It is about 110km from Kigali the capital city of Rwanda approximately 2 and  a half hours drive. Its beautiful evergreen and lush vegetation which accommodates the wildlife is the first thing that will steal your breath way and leave you gasping for your breath and the variety of beautiful birds is the best scenery that will always be in your memeory its such a beautiful experience and the best memory to keep forever.
